Born near Uman and raised in a traditional religious home Moyshe Khashtshevatski (1897-1943) later became close to the Soviet Yiddish literary world based in Kiev. Upon the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union Khashtshevatski fled east to Samarkand. Following the death of his only son, Khashtshevatski volunteered for mobilization into the Red Army, despite the fact that he was forty-six years of age. He died in battle soon after.
