Established in 1917, the National Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) was formed in order to support Jewish soldiers in the U.S. military. The influence of the times is evident; one of the passages quoted in “Maxims from the Midrash” bears the following comment: “The Nazis too will lose all the forced gains of their slave labor” (Bo, 2).
