The First of the Maccabees was originally serialized under a pseudonym in “The Israelite” a Jewish weekly founded by Wise. Later, against Wise’s wishes, it was printed by Howard Bloch under his real name. The novel covers the events of the Hasmonean era. According to Wise’s autobiography, he wrote it in order to fill the void of English-language Jewish fiction.
