The author was the city scribe in Lublin from where he fled pogroms to the safety of Vienna, whereupon in 1670 he was expelled from that city when Vienna banned Jews from its environs - he finally settled in Eretz Israel. Of related interest, in the present work it is stated (ff. 30b-31a) that the Messiah disappeared in 1670 and will reappear 40 years hence. These words were in fact added to the book by followers of Shabbtai Tzvi, whose reign ceased in 1670. See M. J. Heller, The Seventeenth Century Hebrew Book, Vol. II, pp. 1266-67.
