Peru, 24th January, 1637. $4000 - $6000 ❧ The Inquisition of Peru notifies the Inquisition in Mexico of the sighting of a Portuguese merchant and auctioneer named Gonzalo Barraza about whom six witnesses have determined that he practices Judaism and thus should be immediately arrested. Records show that by 1641 Gonzalo Barraza was apprehended by the Inquisition and held in their detention facilities in Cartagena, Colombia. The Peruvian Inquisition stretched from 1570-1820, ceasing to exist upon the advent of the Peruvian War of Independence. 122 (HEBREW GRAMMAR). Johannes Buxtorf. Lexicon Hebraicum-Chaldaicum. Hebrew manuscript written on paper in a large, neat, square Sephardic hand, with occasional cursive. ff. 81. Few stains, trace wormed. Contemporary calf-backed boards, spine gilt, rubbed. 4to. (Algeria?), 1800. $600 - $900 ❧ The colophon states this manuscript was written in 1800 by the scribe “Nissim Boaz for the esteemed… (name erased).” Previous owner’s name Abraham Benichou in gilt on spine. Later owner’s inscription on first page by Yosef Meshash: “I sold this book to Haham Abraham Laskov.”
