Born in Minsk, studied under his famous second cousin Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzenski. Although R. Zvi Hirsch was on par with the elite European rabbinic scholars of his day, in 1891 he accepted the position as rabbi in a religiously underdeveloped part of the American Mid-West in order that he would be free to pursue his scholarly endeavors.
