A native of Provence, the author was exiled from France in the expulsion of 1306 and eventually settled in Toledo, where he studied under the guidance of R. Asher ben Yechiel (Ro’sh). In his Code, Rabbeinu Yerucham quotes the opinions of French, Provencal and Spanish authorities, recording for posterity the customs of those communities. Divided into two: “Adam VeChavah” focuses on life-cycles and ritual law, “Meisharim” deals with civil law. An important early Halachic codex, it was greatly relied upon by the Beth Yoseph.
