Berlin born, Yohanan Simon (1905-76) studied at the Max Beckmann School of Art in Frankfurt and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He then moved to Paris where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, before spending time in New York. Simon immigrated to Palestine in 1936, becoming a member of Kibbutz Gan Shmuel. He executed a number of murals for public buildings and hotels; he also illustrated books and designed stage sets. His later work became more abstract and colorful (see previous lot), seemingly influenced by Fauvism. <<Provenance: >>Sotheby’s New York, Judaica, April 14th, 1998, lot 92.
