This Ukrainian film was based on Sholem Aleichem’s theatrical novel “Wandering Stars” and depicts the Shtetl as an ideological landscape in a struggle for existence. However it was withdrawn from circulation for “idealizing the pathological decadent mood of the decaying bourgeoisie.”
