The celebrated English divine Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) wrote this account of a Jewish heiress from Holland who braved her mother’s pleas and her former co-religionists’ persecution to convert to Christianity. Not wishing to embrace the “idolatrous” Christianity (i.e. Roman Catholicism) that was practiced on the Continent, she fled to England, where she was baptized as an Anglican by William Lloyd, Bishop of St. Asaph.
