Gustav Gottheil (1827-1903) was a Prussian-born American rabbi whose sympathies and interests were broadly universalist. Appointed senior rabbi of New York City’s Temple Emanu-El in 1875, he grew to become one of the most influential, well-known and controversial Reform Jewish leaders of his time.
