Johann Bodenschatz (1717-97), a South German Christian Orientalist, made the sociological study of Judaism his specialty, producing this truly monumental work which did much to secure for Judaism a favorable consideration in Germany. “Because of its objectivity, (this work) is a significant source for the ceremonial practices of the German Jews.” (See Frederick Hauck, Neue Deutsche Biographie).
