Antonio Luiz, a native of Lisbon, was Professor of Philosophy and Medicine at the University of Coimbra. Luiz was celebrated for his mastery of the Greek language. He died circa 1565. Dr. Augusto da Silva Carvalho described Luiz as the "Judeu Lisbonese.” In the catalogue of the library of King Manuel of Portugal (pp. 519-29), the claim was made that Luiz had preceded Newton in the discovery of the law of gravity
