The R. Chaim Halberstam of Sanz Copy. R. Chaim Sanzer (1797-1876) was one of the greatest Chassidic leaders of his generation and author of the profound Halachic work, Divrei Chaim. One of the principles he insisted upon was that a synthesis between Chassidic thought and rigorous traditional scholarship was essential. That the present work, She’erith Yoseph, on Talmudic methodology was to be found in his library, only emphasizes this axiom. R. Shalom Eliezer Halberstam (1862-1944), was born when his father was 65 years old. His saintly life was brought to a shocking end when he was murdered by the Germans in Auschwitz, alongside his own son Meshullam-Zushye, while wrapped in a Kittel and Tallith.
