(FRENCH JUDAICA)

Two manuscript documents of the Portuguese “Jewish Nation” in Bordeaux pertaining to Shechitah (ritual slaughter): I. Deed for three-year lease of an abattoir, between representatives of the nation Juive Portugaise and a guild of Gentile butchers. pp. 2 + 2 integral blanks. * II: A notarized writ, recalling article 9 of “Règlement de la Nation,” that consented to allow the practice of butchery by the Portuguese Jews. I. . II: pp. 7 + 1 integral blank

Bordeaux: 18th century

Est: $3,000 - $4,000
Signatories on these documents are grandees of the “Portuguese Jewish Nation” of Bordeaux: Jacob Dias Pereyra, Syndic; Francois Henriques Raba (1743-1821), member of a powerful family of merchants who traded in the Caribbean; and Lopes-Dubec, Deputy of the Bordeaux Jews to the National Assembly. These documents allow us to see how the Marranos, newly arrived from the Iberian Peninsula, were now able to openly practice their religion upon French soil.
