The influence of early nineteenth-century Russian woodcuts interspersed with strong Cubist sculptural elements are most clearly apparent in Ryback’s graphic black-and-white illustrations of birds for this book of children’s poetry. The vase of flowers represented in vibrant colors on the lower wrapper is a motif borrowed from Jewish tombstone carvings
