Not much is known of Elman’s life, though it is believed that he took part in the ethnographic tour organized by the Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society in 1915-16, along with Lissitzky and Ryback and studied silver ceremonial objects and synagogue wood carvings. Lissitzky’s popularity as an illustrator is attested to by the logo designs he produced for the major Jewish publishing houses. This particular design for the Yidisher Folks Farlag appears on a large number of the books published by this house. See Ruth Apter-Gabriel, “El Lissitzky’s Jewish Works” in IMC, Tradition and Revolution, p. 109
