Complete in 19 volumes. Replete with numerous commentaries. Each volume with individual title within architectural border printed in red and black. THE IMMANUEL LOEW SET, with his marginal notations. Presented to Loew upon his marriage. First volume with calligraphic dedication inscribed on vellum Ex-library. Few light stains in places, otherwise remarkably clean. Contemporary uniform half-roan backed boards, spine in compartments, crimson gilt-tooled spine-labels (two lacking), rubbed and worn, two vols. split, vol. I in later boards. The most important publication of the illustrious Romm printers at Vilna. The Vilna Shas was edited by Samuel Shraga Feiginsohn and contains over a hundred commentaries and addenda Hungarian rabbi and scholar, Immanuel Loew’s (1854-1944) fame rests on his pioneering work in the field of talmudic and rabbinic lexiconography and in the study of artifacts such as coins from talmudic times. He was a renowned preacher in the Hungarian language and succeeded his father as rabbi of Szeged, Hungary
