A rare liturgical volume, one of only a handful of 16th century Machzorim prepared according to German rite. Zedner (p.466) notes an (incomplete) companion Machzor prepared according to Polish custom, but is entirely unfamiliar with the present edition. Initial end-papers with the signature of Raphael Segal, son of the Communal leader (“Borer Hamedina”) Aaron Segal of Silsheim, Alsace. Also with manuscript record of anniversaries of the Segal Family. The Machzor is replete with marginal notes, in more than one hand, pertaining to particular synagogal custom and correct reading of the prayers. Most notations in a late 16th century Aschkenazi hand, see especially the lengthy directive concerning supplications to be recited during the New Year sounding of the Shophar (p.60v) MEMO: I: ff. (3), 7-255, (3), 261-284. II: 88, (2), 92-286, 285-291, lacking final blank with printer’s mark on recto. f.94 in duplicate. Lacking lower corner of f. 96, clean tear on f.133.
