An historically significant prayer-book, the first printed in the Soviet Union. Produced at a time of relative thaw, following the death of Joseph Stalin three years earlier. Indicative of the forced political circumstances under which the prayer-book was produced are rabbinic sources celebrating the desire for peace, also, the censored version of the prayer “Al Hanissim” in which the expression “Ve’al Hamilchamoth” is removed. Striking, are the Hebrew prayers for the welfare of the USSR on pp.230-31.
