PRICE REALIZED $4,000
AN UNCOMMON SPANISH MINIATURE PRAYER-BOOK.
A delightful miniature prayer-book for Sabbath and week-day. Includes the first modern European translation of Solomon Alkabetz’s paean to the Sabbath “Lecha Dodi.”
In 1734, the numbers of the Spanish & Portuguese congregation in The Hague barely reached one hundred. Thus, few Spanish liturgical works were printed there and those few, no doubt, in limited numbers. See M. J. Benardete, Hispanic Culture and Character of the Sephardic Jews (1952), pp.78 & 95; and H.P. Salomon, Leha Dodi: Hispanic Origin and Spanish Translation, in: The American Sephardi (1971) pp.32-42.
Another (incomplete) copy of this prayer-book was sold by Christie’s New York, Hebrew Printed Books: Duplicates from the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 22nd May 1986, Lot 98.
