R. Shabbetai Sofer was commissioned by the Rabbis of the Council of Three Lands to publish an authorised and accurate edition of the Prayer-book, which he did with much reference to the now lost Siddur of R. Solomon Luria. It was first published in 1617 in Prague. As the foremost grammarian of his generation he was accorded glowing approbations from the greatest Rabbinic personages of the day. The manuscript of R. Shabbetai Sofer’s daily prayer book was sold by Christie’s, Important Hebrew Manuscripts and Printed Books from The Library of the London Beth Din, New York, 23rd June 1999, Lot 106.
