The author (1878-1939?) was a Hebrew writer and investigator of Karaism, who, whilst conducting business in Halicz, Eastern Galicia, developed an interest in the town’s Karaites. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he was put on trial by the Russians for Zionist activities and taken to the Soviet Union where he disappeared without trace. See EJ, VI col.1137.
