Two volumes (mixed set). Titles within elaborate frames, many initial letters within cartouches. First volume: The Elkan Nathan Adler and (later) the Chief Rabbi Hermann Adler copy. Marginal notations in more than one early Italian hand, noting variations in custom and in one instance quoting the Responsa of Benjamin Ze’ev (see lot 41) ff. 197 and 189. Signed by censors at end. Censored portions often replaced in manuscript. Marginal paper repairs, title of first vol. laid down, second vol. shorter with few leaves supplied from another copy. Portion of a Hebrew printed Eulogy (Italy, 1782) for the philanthropist Jacob Manto used as binder’s blank. 19th-century boards, backstrip of first removed revealing spine made up of manuscript leaf with Hebrew cantorial musical notations, second retaining covers of an earlier binding.
