Translation from the Hebrew and introductory essay by the Polish-Jewish antiquarian Samuel Schwarz. A long-time resident of Portugal, it was he who discovered the lost community of New Christians in Belmonte (see lot ***). He later established the Museu Luso-Hebraico in Tomar’s 15th century synagogue building (see Dedication pp. 9-10)
