Speede’s map was reissued several times and resembles Ortelius’ Palestine after S. Tilemannus. The plan of Jerusalem (upper left) is after Arias Montanus. Vignettes of Temple vessels on bottom are flanked by verses from the New Testament. Emblems of the Tribes, signifying the division of the land, appropriately placed throughout the map. Also displayed is the route of the Israelite exodus from Egypt, the desert encampment, Moses’ copper snake and the felling of cedar trees in Lebanon on behalf of the construction of the Temple. Sea creatures abound, including a mermaid at far left.
