<<A celebrated atlas - Containing THE CLOVERLEAF WORLD MAP.>> The German theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606) is famed for this work first published in 1581. It provides the most complete summary of biblical geography available and describes the Holy Land by following the travels of various notables from the Bible. In addition to conventional maps (Holy Land, Egypt, and views of Jerusalem and the Temple of Solomon), the book also <<contains the three celebrated figurative maps:>> Europe in the form of a crowned and robed woman. <<*>> Asia as the winged horse Pegasus. <<*>> And most famously, a world map showing the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa on a cloverleaf projection with Jerusalem at the center, and with the coast of the New World appearing far left. A library (incomplete) copy.
