The author, Lewis Falley Allen was a close friend of Mordecai M. Noah, founder of a proposed Jewish refuge at Grand Island in the Niagara River, to be called "Ararat." A farmer, businessman, politician and prominent Buffalonian, Lewis Falley Allen (1800-90) was the uncle of President Grover Cleveland and is credited with introducing Cleveland to the practice of law and politics, therefore paving the way for his eventual presidency.
