R. Moshe ben Mordechai Galante was a disciple of R. Moshe Cordovero in Safed and one of the select few ordained by R. Ya’akov Berab at the time of the historic revival of the ancient Semicha (ordination). The Author was the grandfather of R. Moshe ben Yonathan Galante (1621-89) of Safed and later Jerusalem, who in turn was the maternal grandfather of R. Moshe Hagiz. See E. Carlebach, The Pursuit of Heresy (1990) pp. 29-31. The novellae of R. Isaac Aboab to Tractate Beitzah were penned by Isaac Aboab II (1433-1493), "the last Gaon of Castille" (EJ, Vol. II, col. 93). The novellae to Bava Metzi'a were misattributed to Ritva (EJ, Vol. XVI, col. 848).
