The book represents co-operation of a sort between the once opposed camps of Chassidim and Mithnagdim. The printer, R. Yisrael Jaffe, was a noted Chasid, much attached to R. Dov Baer of Lubavitch. The editor and commentator, R. Yehoshua Zeitlish, founder of the Zeitlin family, was one of the great Lithuanian Gaonim of the day. R. Yehoshua Zeitlish was one of three Mithagdic luminaries that R. Shneur Zalman (the Alter Rebbe), visited upon his release from St. Petersburg prison, in order to cement peaceful relations between the two warring factions. See H.M. Heilman, Beith Rebbe (Berditchev, 1900) ff. 38-9.
