The author (d. 1798) was a disciple of the Maggid of Mezeritch and close with R. Pinchas of Koretz, R. Aharon of Karlin and many of the other great Tzadikim of that place and time. Originally a wine merchant, R. Ze’ev Wolf was so inspired by Chassidism he left his trade to become a Maggid in his hometown of Zhitomir.
