<<A controversial text.>> Despite the title proclaiming that the work was authored by R. Jacob Babani, a SHaDa”R (emissary) from Safed who resided in Amsterdam for an extended period, contemporary scholars have argued that the true author was R. Bassan, the Sephardic rabbi of Amsterdam and a prominent ally of R. Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (RaMCHa”L). Controversial from its inception, some authorities fiercely rejected the arguments made by Bassan. Most notably, see R. Chaim David Azulai’s (CHID”A) Yoseph Ometz no. 10. Bassan was certainly aware of the incendiary nature of his work, choosing to publish it under a pseudonym, and with a spurious place of publication.
