The Chief Rabbi of Izmir, Algazi (1610-83) was an outspoken opponent of the pseudo-Messiah Shabthai Zevi. At the height of Zevi’s power, Algazi was forced to flee his own city. He thereafter settled in Jerusalem. See G. Scholem, Sabbatai Sevi, p. 414.
