Adarbi was a disciple of R. Yoseph Ta’itatzak (Mahari Tatz), pre-eminent halachist and mystic of Salonika. Adarbi himself was appointed Rabbi of the Portuguese Congregation in Salonika. The Author refers consistently to Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed, a staple of Jewish preachers of the day.
