Affectionately known as R. Eizikel Komarner, he was raised by his uncle, R. Tzvi Hirsch Eichenstein of Zidachov. His father, Rabbi Alexander Sender Safrin (1770-1818), was a disciple of the Chozeh of Lublin and the founder of the Komarner Chassidic dynasty.
