Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer served as the rabbi of Eisenstadt for 18 years where he founded a Yeshiva imbued with a spirit that later became personified as “Torah im Derech Eretz.” Although certain Hungarian rabbinic luminaries, such as Maharam Schick, sent their children to his Yeshiva, the zealous atmosphere in Hungary drove R. Hildesheimer to leave in 1869 and reestablish himself in Germany.
