Opposed to the codification efforts of his cousin, the Rem’a, the Maharshal championed his own work, which sought to determine the appropriate Halachah only after the reader charged through an in-depth analysis of all the relevant sources and ways to interpret them. From this approach, the name of this work is derived: ‘Solomon’s Sea,’ a reference to both the washbasin in the Temple, as well as to the never-ending depth of Talmudic study.
