A native of Adrianople, Turkey, R. Moshe Alsheich (1508-93) settled in Safed, where he was was ordained by R. Yoseph Karo (upon whom had been conferred the reintroduced Semicha of R. Jacob Berab). Part of the cabal of scholars during Safed’s golden age, R. Moshe Alsheich was a teacher of R. Chaim Vital. Alsheich is one of the few rabbis to be universally known as ‘Hakadosh’ - The Holy. His homiletical Biblical commentary is celebrated as a fundamental classic.
