Shlomo Ben Yoseph (originally Tabachnik, 1913-38) was a member of the Revisionist Zionist underground group, the Irgun. He participated in an April 21, 1938 attack on an Arab bus intended as a retaliation for an earlier raid by Arabs that killed six Jews. Although no Arab was killed in this attack and Ben-Yoseph was of good character without any previous record, the British insisted upon the death sentence. Just before he was hanged, he called out "Long live the Jewish state! Long live Jabotinsky.” This affair provoked outrage and mourning not only in the Yishuv but across the Jewish world. In Poland tens of thousands of Jews fasted in mourning in accordance to a plea from the Rabbinate. The Agudath Israel organization also issued a passionate protest (pp. 29-30) and the Daf HaYomi Siyum HaShas, which was scheduled at this time, was canceled due to the execution. Ben-Yoseph remains revered, especially by right-wing Zionist groups.
