Published by the National Council of Jewish Women, a guide to filing affidavits of support for those who wish to ease the process by which family members and friends can immigrate to the United States. Published at a time when the United States expanded its interpretation of the “public charge” clause, which limited the immigration of individuals deemed to become a burden to the American economy, to include a much broader range. Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe spiked in the early 20th century but saw a significant decline following the passing of the Immigration Act of 1924, which significantly tightened quotas. These quotas continued to be kept in place until 1965, despite the desperate need of Jews to escape from Nazi-ruled Germany and occupied Europe.
