In a sense, R. Moshe Cordovero (1522-70) did for Kabbalah what Maimonides executed for Halachah: He provided a systematic code. Upon the ReMa”K's death, his carefully constructed system of Kabbalah would be left to be further developed by his younger contemporary in Safed, the revolutionary AR"I (R. Isaac Luria).
