R. Shemaiah di Modena composed the introduction to this work and relates that it is entitled "Bnei Shmuel," as the author - (who was named after his grandfather, Samuel di Modena, the Maharshda"m), had no children of his own, hence his legacy is the present work of Torah scholarship. The afterword recounts the author's losses due to civil unrest in Salonika in 1614. See Y. Mehlman, Genuzoth Sepharim, p. 92. See also M. J. Heller, The Seventeenth Century Hebrew Book, Vol. I, pp. 296-7.
