David Philipson (1862-1949) was the leading American Reform rabbi of his time. The son of German-Jewish immigrants, he was a member of the first graduating class of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, feted at the celebrated Trefa Banquet. Philipson took over the ministry at Congregation Bene Israel from Rev. Isaac M. Wise. As rabbi of the largest Reform congregation in the center of Reform Jewish life, Philipson had tremendous influence both in Cincinnati and indeed the country as a whole.
