A native of Hungary, Benjamin Szold (1829-1902) accepted an invitation to become rabbi in Baltimore in 1859, where he led Congregation Oheb Shalom to become one of the foremost Reform synagogues in the United States. His eldest daughter was the leading Zionist Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah and Youth Aliyah.
