By recommendation of New York Governor Reuben Fenton, this day was devoted to “humiliation and prayer” and appropriate services were conducted in New York’s various Houses of Worship. Amidst the six-column front-page of this newspaper, columns 5-6 are occupied with reports from New York’s synagogues, detailing the services and sermons held mourning the death of President Lincoln. Provides detailed accounts of affairs conducted at New York synagogues “B`nai Israel, Bikur Cholim U-Kadisha and Shaari Zedek” in which each synagogue was draped in mourning black.
