OVERVIEW

On the heels of Kestenbaum & Company’s successful June 2022 auction, we are proud to present our late summer Judaica auction with a broad range of fields of interest. The present sale is Kestenbaum & Company’s 99th Auction and is taking place a few short months before our celebratory 100th Auction extravaganza, which will include exceptionally treasured artifacts relating to all facets of Jewish history and culture, whether the printed or written word, art or otherwise.

Anchored by a fine selection of Hebrew Printed Books, Auction 99 includes other categories such as Manuscripts, American-Judaica, Chassidism and Illustrated Books. Within Hebrew Printed Books, a set of Maimonides’ Mishnah Torah with the First Edition of Joseph Karo’s Keseph Mishnah (Venice, 1574-5) makes a strong impression (Lot 141). So too, the First Edition of the first Biblical Concordance, Meir Nathiv (Venice, 1524), printed by Daniel Bomberg (Lot 177) is an attractive draw. A choice selection of Early Bibles is being offered (Lots 38-47), while the First Edition of R. Elijah of Vilna’s commentary to Sepher Yetzirah (Grodno, 1806) rounds out the category (Lot 72).

Within Manuscripts and Letters, the unpublished Torah commentary of R. Dovid Sperber, the Gaon of Brashov (Lot 199) is a highlight, along with an 18th century Manuscript Siddur prayerbook from Italy (Lot 206). Signed letters from 20th century rabbis such as R. Ya’akov Yisrael Kanievsky (Lot 197), R. Avraham Yitzchak Hakohen Kook (Lot 198) and R. Isser Yehuadh Unterman (Lot 187) are also featured.

American-Judaica (Lots 9-23) includes a Dutch document from 1835 relating to the communal care for the Jewish poor in Suriname (Lot 11), the Baltimore, 1819 argument of Henry Brackenridge in favor of Maryland’s Jew Bill (Lot 22) and various Pinkasim, (Lots 18-20), documenting aspects of early American communal Jewish life.

Within Chassidism (Lots 52-62), the First Edition of R. Hillel Paritcher’s Pelach HaRimon (Vilna, 1887) is found (Lot 60), along with a Group of Seven Various Volumes of R. Schnuer Zalman of Liadi’s Shulchan Aruch HaRav, including First Editions (Lot 55). Items relating to the Holocaust (Lots 87-93) include a copy of Hungary’s Second Jewish Law (Budapest, 1939), which restricted the economic activity of Jews, and defined them legally on a racial basis (Lot 89). Similarly, Bulgaria’s 1941 ‘Law for the Protection of the Nation’ severely curbed the freedoms of that country’s Jews (Lot 49).

Other General lots include a Group of c. 110 posters and documents relating to Chareidi life in Jerusalem during the first half of the 20th century (Lot 97), and a Collection of c. 19 prayer pamhplets of London’s Spanish & Portuguese community marking various occasions (Lot 26). Norohiro Yasue’s ‘The Jewish People’ (Tokyo, 1937) is a work by the Japanese colonel who assisted in the rescuing of Jews from Europe during World War II so that they might bring economic benefit to Japanese-held territory (Lot 103).
