Auction of Fine Judaica: Rare Printed Books, Manuscripts, Autograph Letters & Graphic Arts

OVERVIEW

             After Kestenbaum & Company’s successful June 2021 auction, we are proud to present our autumnal Judaica auction that contains an especially broad range of fields of interest. The sale can be divided into six primary categories: Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-56), Manuscripts (Lots 57-76), Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 77-289), General Printed Books (Including American-Judaica) (Lots 290-378), Illustrated Books and Graphic Art (Lots 379-392) and finally, Ceremonial Objects (Including Coins and Medals) (Lots 393-410). 

            Within Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-56), manuscripts from rabbis hailing across the breadth of the Jewish world are on offer, including letters by Mahara”m Schick (Lot 40, Est. $3,000-5,000), Grand-Rebbe Menachem Mendel of Vizhnitz (Lot 18, Est. $10,000-15,000) and R. Ya’akov Yisroel Kanievsky- the Steipler Gaon (Lot 24, Est. $1,000-1,500). So too, communications from R. Itzikel of Przeworsk (Lot 14, Est. $4,000-6,000), R. Yisrael Abuhatzeira- the Baba Sali (Lot 1, Est. $1,500-2,500), Grand-Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson of Lubavitch (Lots 41-46) and R. Avraham Yitzchak Hakohen Kook (Lot 25, $1,000-2,000) are also featured. Of special significance are a number of lots that contain groupings of letters from American Roshei YeshivaVizhnitz and Rachmastrivka Grand-Rebbes, rabbinic leaders of Eretz Yisrael and so on. These curated lots will tremendously enhance any collection. See Lots 3, 7-8, 11-13, 32-34, 36 and 54.

            Within Manuscripts (Lots 57-76), a Lost Prayer Authored by the Mahara”l of Prague (Lot 68, Est. $20,000-30,000) is a highly unique artifact, while a curious Burial Society Supplication for Forgiveness from the Dead (Lot 61, Est. $6,000-9,000) is of immense scholarly potential. An Illustrated Psalms Manuscript from 1910-13 (Lot 57, Est. $8,000-12,000) serves as one of the earliest examples of Jewish-American scribal art. Finally, an Autograph Manuscript from R. Moses Sopher (Chassam Sopher) (Lot 73, Est. $8,000-12,000) contains the draft of his commentary to the Torah portions of Balak-Pinchas.

            The largest category within the auction, Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 77-289), stemming almost entirely from a private collection, contains classic Halachic works such as R. Yitzchak Alfasi’s ‘Ri”f’ (Lot 84, Est. $4,000-6,000), the Responsa of R. Shlomo ibn Adret (Rashb”a) (Lot 269, Est. $2,000-3,000), A Valmadonna copy of the Sepher Mitzvoth Gadol (Sma”g) (Lot 245, Est. $4,000-6,000) and R. Mordechai Jaffe’s complete Levushim (Lot 181, Est. $5,000-7,000). Also on offer are rare Jewish works of philosophy, polemic and poetry, such as R. Immanuel of Rome’s SepherMachbaroth (Lot 174, Est. $7,000-10,000), R. Shem-Tov ibn Shaprut’s Pardes Rimonim on Aggadah (Lot 267, Est. $2,000-3,000), R. Joseph Solomon Delmedigo’s Sepher Eilim- Ma’ayan Ganim- Ma’ayan Chathum (Lot 139, Est. $8,000-12,000) and R. Yonathan Eybescheutz’s Luchoth Eduth (Lot 149, Est. $2,000-3,000). Chassidic works (Lots 115-134) are also well-represented, with the First Edition of R. Dov-Baer of Lubavitch’s Biurei HaZohar (Lot 116, Est. $3,000-5,000), Second Edition of the famed Chassidic work Toldoth Ya’akov Yoseph (Lot 117, Est. $2,000-3,000) and the Sidrei Taharoth of Grand-Rebbe of Radzyn, Gershon Chanoch Leiner, including his important hand-colored map of the boundaries of Eretz Yisrael (Lot 125, Est. $5,000-7,000). 

             A strong series of offerings is found with American and Anglo Judaica (Lots 290-324), including a Royal Order from King George III (Lot 292, Est. $3,000-5,000) declaring that Moses Frank be reimbursed for supplying war provisions to soldiers en route to Martinique during the Seven Years War and a Proclamation Granting Jews Full Civil Rights in the Dutch West Indies (Lot 295, Est. $5,000-7,000). An 1803 document from one Jacob Lowe to Isaac Lowe of Hardin County, Kentucky proclaims the debt of a black slave (Lot 297, $2,000-3,000), serving as a testament to the complicated relations between these two American minority groups. An Autograph Letter from Judah Touro (Lot 301, Est. $4,000-6,000) and a Discourse delivered at Congregation Mikveh Israel in the Wake of President Abraham Lincoln’s Assassination (Lot 305, Est. $4,000-6,000) are two mesmerizing items relating to 19th century American Jewry. 

          Another series of wide-ranging and fascinating items is found within General Printed Books (Lots 325-378). The highly desirable Account of Marrano Explorer Pedro Teixeira (Lot 376, Est. $30,000-40,000) records his adventures in the Near and Far East.  Among other noteworthy lots can be found a detailed account of the 1636 Blood Libel against Marek (Moses) Markowicz (Lot 330, Est. $4,000-6,000) as well as Buenting’s Famed Cloverleaf Map within his Atlas (Lot 331, Est. $5,000-7,000) and the First Jewish Cookbook Printed in America (Lot 332, Est. $6,000-8,000). Two poignant items related to the Holocaust and the period just before it are a Letter of Protection to Two Hungarian Jews from Angelo Rotta (Lot 339, Est. $2,000-3,000) and the Cracow Phonebook from 1939 (Lot 371, Est. $3,000-5,000) containing many Jewish names. 

         Within Illustrated Books and Graphic Art (Lots 379-392), an illuminated manuscript facsimile of the Kennicott Bible (Lot 383, Est. $3,000-5,000) is one of a number of such limited reproductions on offer (See Lots 381-385). Another contribution is a Marc Chagall Lithograph of Moses on Sinai with the Tablets of the Law (Lot 389, Est. $3,000-5,000). 

      The final category within the sale, that of Ceremonial Objects (Lots 393-410), contains a Baroque Boxwood and Ivory Torah Pointer Lot 404, Est. $2,000-3,000) as well as an Exceptional Pair of Bohemian Torah Mantles (Lot 410, Est. $15,000-20,000). Additional offerings include a Rare German Wicker Matzah Basket (Lot 403, Est. $1,500-2,500) and a Bezalel Plated-Brass Hanging Chanuka Lamp (Lot 398, Est. $3,000-5,000).
