Auction of Fine Judaica - June 14, 2018: Post-Sale Report
Kestenbaum & Company offered a wide selection of materials in this auction of 414 lots. The Printed Books section performed well overall, with a number of noteworthy sales. Among them was David Kimchi’s Sepher Shorashim, (Naples, 1490) which sold for $43,750 (Lot 196).
The first secular text written in Ladino “La Guerta de Oro” by David Attias (Livorno, 1778) performed remarkably well, earning $16,250 against its $3,000-5,000 estimate (Lot 201).
The Walton Bible (London, 1655-57) “the most accurate and best-equipped of the great Polyglots” (Darlow & Moule 1446) exceeded its estimate of $5,000-7,000 garnering $11,875 (Lot 67).
The Manuscripts and Autographed Letters section displayed a veritable pantheon of Jewish personalities of recent centuries. A letter written by Albert Einstein in 1946 addressing the seemingly contradictory values of Zionism and Universalism was hammered in at $45,000 against its estimate of $20,000-30,000 (Lot 291).
A letter written by “Reb Shayele,” Grand Rabbi of Kerestir, requesting financial assistance to rebuild his Beit Midrash, estimated at $10,000-15,000, fetched $21,250 (Lot 301). A Yemenite 17th-century Biblical commentary by R. Shalom Shabazi’s “Hemdath Yamim, formerly in the celebrated collection of Savid Solomon Sassoon and carrying an auction estimate of $10,000-15,000 was sold for $32,500 (Lot 324).
