The Charles (Kalonymus) Richter Collection
of Jewish Liturgy
Along with Books Formerly in the Libraries of
Prof. Leonard C. Mishkin & H.P. Kraus
Together with deaccessions from the
Reference Library of Kestenbaum & Company
This was the first Shelf-Sale organized by Kestenbaum & Company.
A short auction of just 45 lots it was primarily comprised of books from the Richter Collection of Jewish Liturgy, highlights of which were sold by Kestenbaum & Company in September 2008. The present auction represented the bulk of Mr. Richter's exceptional library of some 2,000 volumes.
Further fine individual rarities from the Richter Collection will be offered for sale at auction later in the Fall.
The Preface to the September 2008 Kestenbaum auction-catalogue first introduced the Richter Collection as follows: "Mr. Richter assembled a vast library comprising a huge range of Siddurim, Machzorim and varied other liturgical works such as Selichoth, Kinoth and Minhag books. Everything that pertained to Jewish liturgy and the Synagogue was of interest to him. In this regard he did much original research on the books in his collection, rich not only with antiquarian material but also containing an extensive research library."
Given the fine summer weather outdoors, the Shelf-Sale was held amidst an appropriately relaxed atmosphere. The enthusiasm of the attendees resulted in a 100% sale record, all conducted by our auctioneer in just 24 minutes!
